Match Report
Town battle back to claim a commanding win against Denton Town
Bollington Town produced a gutsy, character-filled performance at Congleton High School, overcoming an early penalty setback to secure a dominant 4-2 victory over Denton Town — with Declan Hanks, Alfie Earith from the spot, Ally Harrison-Virani and Joshua Connolly all getting on the scoresheet in a memorable afternoon.
Early Penalty Blow
Town were dealt a cruel early setback when Ryan Hibbert's mistimed shot inadvertently caught an opposition player, leaving the referee no choice but to point to the spot. Denton Town converted to take a shock lead inside the opening minute. 0–1.
Ally Goes Close
Town began to grow into the game when Ally Harrison-Virani drove a shot on target from 10 yards out on the left wing, only for the effort to clip a defender and be deflected wide. A sign of things to come from a lively Harrison-Virani.
Eastham Effort Over
Jake Eastham had a sight of goal and got a shot away, but the effort drifted over the crossbar. Town were pushing for an equaliser.
Joyce Saves 1v1
Denton's number eleven broke clear and bore down on goal, but Matthew Joyce stood up well and made a key save to deny the chance. An important stop to keep Town in it.
Denton Miss a Sitter
A chaotic scramble in the Town box should have put Denton further ahead, but an opposition player somehow missed from point-blank range with the goal gaping. A massive let-off — and Town made them pay within a minute.
Goal — Declan Hanks
Town drew level immediately. Zach Gatward's inviting cross from the right found Declan Hanks arriving in the box, who finished with composure to restore parity. A richly deserved equaliser and a moment that changed the game. 1–1.
Connolly Booked
Joshua Connolly was shown a yellow card for a foul on the Denton goalkeeper — an unfortunate caution that didn't dampen his influence on the game as the half wore on.
Late First Half Pressure
Town finished the half on the front foot. Declan Hanks had a close chance at 43' that narrowly failed to find the target, Connolly tested the keeper from distance at 44', and Ally Harrison-Virani blazed an effort over in stoppage time. Both sides went in level, but Town looked the more dangerous.
Goal — Alfie Earith (Pen)
Town took the lead from the spot when a foul in the box handed them a penalty. Alfie Earith stepped up and converted with his usual composure, giving Bollington the lead they had been threatening for much of the match. 2–1.
Goal — Ally Harrison-Virani
Town doubled their advantage almost immediately, with a devastating one-two punch. Zach Gatward's sharp pass slid Ally Harrison-Virani in behind the defence, and she finished clinically from seven yards out. A stunning blow for Denton. 3–1.
Denton Pull One Back
Denton Town refused to lie down and pulled a goal back within a minute to make it 3–2. A nervy moment for Town, but the response was emphatic.
Connolly Offside
Joshua Connolly had the ball in the net almost immediately after the restart, only for the flag to go up for offside. The goal was chalked off — but Connolly wasn't done.
Goal — Joshua Connolly
Connolly got his legitimate goal. Zach Gatward played a decisive through ball into the channel, and Joshua Connolly showed tremendous composure to hold off two centre-backs and finish clinically. The game was put to bed. 4–2.
Zach Denied — Connolly Ruled Offside Again
Town continued to press for more. Zach Gatward had a shot on target well saved by the Denton keeper at 63', before Connolly had another effort ruled out for offside at 64' — the flag going up for an offside pass from Declan Hanks that preceded the finish.
Hanks Shot Saved
Alfie Earith's cross from the right found Declan Hanks in a dangerous area, but the Denton keeper produced a good save to deny him a brace. Town continued to create.
Hibbert Booked for Dissent
Ryan Hibbert picked up a yellow card for dissent after a disagreement with the referee. He then required a spell of injury treatment at 74' but battled on to see out his shift.
Connolly Denied Again
Declan Hanks whipped a cross into the box to find Joshua Connolly, whose shot on target was well saved by the Denton keeper. Town were relentless even with the points secured.
Fresh Legs
Beau Gatward came on to replace the excellent Joshua Connolly, who had given everything across his 82 minutes on the pitch.
Late Chance Cleared Off the Line
Town had one last chance in stoppage time when Zach Gatward got a shot away that was somehow cleared off the line. A well-earned three points.
Four different scorers, a clean response every time Denton pushed back — that's a proper team performance.
Match Verdict
Bollington Town showed tremendous character at Congleton High School, responding to a cruel opening-minute penalty with a performance full of quality and determination. The first half saw Town create chance after chance despite trailing — Joyce denied in a 1v1, Harrison-Virani going close, Hanks and Connolly both testing the keeper — before a cross gave Declan Hanks the chance to level on 33'. Town went in at the break level and looking the stronger side.
The second half belonged to Bollington. Earith's penalty opened the floodgates, and Harrison-Virani's clinical finish moments later looked to have killed the game — before Denton pulled it back to 3–2 to set up a nervy finale. But Town showed real maturity. Connolly, twice denied by the flag, kept his focus and buried the fourth goal with composure under pressure — putting the result beyond any doubt.
Joshua Connolly was a constant thorn in Denton's side, and Declan Hanks and Ally Harrison-Virani both took their goals well. A deserved, well-rounded team performance.
